On January 18, 2024, the Town of Parachute received a Citizen’s Petition indicating the need for an Urban Renewal Authority within the municipality. Urban renewal is a tool used by local governments across the country that can help address the deterioration and conditions of blight within urban areas. Urban renewal can be used for development and rehabilitation when blighted conditions act as a barrier. It is a method for restoring economic vitality and improving the health and safety of urban areas. With the submission of this petition, the Council embarked on a significant process to determine the best course of action for the Town.
This led to the creation of the Parachute Urban Renewal Authority, officially known as the Parachute Renewal Partnership.
The Authority's board of commissioners consists of 11 members. The Town Council will serve as seven commissioners, joined by four local representatives: one from the County, one from the School District, one from the Special Districts, and an additional at-large commissioner. Each Council member’s term on the commission will coincide with their Council term. With no objections raised, the representative for the School District is Jennifer Baugh, Mike Samson for the County, Michelle Foster for the Special Districts, and local business owner Lee Smith for the at-large position.
