Parachute, Colo. – June 20, 2024 – The Town Council of Parachute has approved Resolution No. 2024-28, declaring the presence of blighted areas and establishing the Parachute Urban Renewal Authority under the Colorado Urban Renewal Law. This new authority will oversee the redevelopment and rehabilitation of these areas.
The Town Council and representatives from affected taxing bodies will form the commission to exercise the powers provided by law. According to C.R.S. §31-25-104(2.5), when a municipality establishes an Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and designates itself as the governing body, the number of commissioners equals the members of the municipality's governing body. Additionally, three commissioners will be appointed: one by the county commissioners, one by a representative from special districts, and one by a member of the local school district board of education. If this results in an even number of commissioners, the mayor will appoint an additional commissioner to ensure an odd number for decision-making purposes.
Since the Parachute Town Council has seven members, this structure initially totals ten commissioners. To achieve an odd number, the mayor will appoint an additional commissioner, bringing the total to eleven.
The Town Council is currently seeking community members interested in serving as the eleventh commissioner. To apply, please submit your letter of interest and resume to Lucy Spalenka, Town Clerk, at lspalenka@parachute.gov by Wednesday, July 10, 2024. The Town Council will review applications, and the mayor will appoint the successful candidate to this important role at a later date.
